What is a soil order and great group?<\/strong>

\nIn Canada 10 orders are defined, this key is focussing on the six soil orders occuring in Ontario:
\nOrganic, Regosolic, Brunisolic, Podzolic, Luvisolic and Gleysolic.
\n
\nOrder:<\/strong>
\nTaxa based on soil properties that reflect the nature of the soil environment and the major soil-forming processes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Great Group:<\/strong>
\nGreat groups are soil taxa formed by the subdivision of each order and carry with them the differentiating criteria of the order to which they belong. They are based on properties that reflect differences in the strengths of the dominant processes<\/span>.

\nHow does this tool work?<\/strong>
\nThe next slide presents an overview of the process. The user responds to questions regarding soil criteria with yes\/no which will guide them first to the soil order and next to the great group. If the user proceeds from the a Great Group the process will start over.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\nThe questions are modified based on the Field manual for describing soils in Ontario by K.A. Denholm and L.W. Schut, 2003.

\nFibric material is undecomposed to weakly decomposed, plant species identifiable, when squeezed no peat escapes through fingers. (vP1 to 4)<\/p>\n\n

1 - Undecomposed; plant structure unaltered; yields only clear water colored light yellow-brown.
\n2 - Almost undecomposed; plant structure distinct; yields only clear water colored light yellow-brown.
\n3 - Very weakly decomposed; plant structure distinct; yields distinctly turbid brown water, no peat substance passes between the fingers, residue not mushy.
\n4 - Weakly decomposed; plant structure distinct; yields strongly turbid water, no peat substance escapes between the fingers, residue rather mushy.

\nGreat Group: Fibrisol<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Criteria:<\/strong> Soils composed mainly of undecomposed<\/span> fibric materials<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Soils of this great group are composed largely of relatively undecomposed fibric organic material.<\/p>\n\n

Fibric material is usually classified on the von Post scale of decomposition as classes 1-4.<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Fibrisols occur extensively in Canada, particularly in peat deposits dominated by sphagnum mosses.<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Fibrisols have a dominantly fibric middle tier, or middle and surface tiers if a terric, lithic, or hydric contact occurs in the middle tier (40cm - 120cm).<\/p>\n\n

Soils composed mainly of partly decomposed mesic materials
\n <\/p>\n\n

Mesic (m) material, moderately to well decomposed, plant structure clear to indistinct, when squeezed up to one third of the peat escapes through fingers. (vP5 & vP6)<\/p>\n\n

5 - Moderately decomposed; plant structure clear but becoming indistinct; yields much turbid brown water, some peat escapes between the fingers, residue very mushy.
\n6 - Strongly decomposed; plant structure somewhat indistinct but clearer in the squeezed residue than in the undisturbed peat; about one-third of the peat escapes between the fingers, residue strongly mushy.<\/p>\n\n
